Fish are an important part of a healthy diet. They are a lean, low-calorie source of protein. However, some fish may contain chemicals that could pose health risks (EPA). The Water Quality Control Division (WQCD), in conjuction with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), and CDPHE Disease Control and Environmental Epidemiology Division (DCEED), conducts an on-going study aimed at investigating the presence of contaminants in fish that can potentially be consumed by the people of Colorado. The results of this study were used to develop statewide General Fish Consumption Guidelines. Please follow these guidelines to protect yourself from the potential risks of eating fish from Colorado with elevated levels of mercury. For site-specific meal advice, select the waterbody of interest from either the map or the list of waterbody names below the map, and follow the link for more information.
