Unintended Pregnancy in Colorado
Nearly half of all pregnancies in Colorado are unintended, meaning they occur sooner than desired or occur when no pregnancy is desired at any time.

Consequences of Unintended Pregnancy: Unintended pregnancies are associated with:regnancies are linked to
·        birth defects
·        low birth weight
·        elective abortion
·        maternal depression
·        increased risk of child abuse
·        lower educational attainment
·        delayed entry into prenatal care
·        high risk of physical violence during pregnancy
·        reduced rates of breastfeeding

Additionally, teen mothers are less likely than their peers to earn a high school diploma or GED.

Affected Populations: All sexually-active women are at risk for unintended pregnancy if they do not have access to high-quality family planning services. In Colorado, women under the age of 25, African-American and Hispanic/Latina women, women who have not completed college, and those who are classified as low-income are more likely to have an unintended pregnancy.
· other physical, mental, and behavioral health problems
Costs to Colorado’s Economy: Unintended pregnancy burdens Colorado’s health and economy, costing Colorado more than $160 million annually in Medicaid expenditures. Nationally, for every public dollar spent on family planning services, $3.74 is saved in Medicaid costs for pregnancy-related services and newborn care.

Impact of the Colorado Family Planning Program: In more than 70 sites throughout Colorado, over 65,000 women and men receive family planning services annually. Eighty-nine percent of these patients have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Over 27,000 unintended pregnancies are prevented each year in Colorado as a direct result of state and federally funded family planning services. Additionally, family planning clinics often serve as an entry point into the health care system for women and families who otherwise lack access to health care services.
By averting unintended pregnancies, family planning programs greatly reduce health and public support costs.
