Women's Wellness Connection (WWC) began in 1991. It is a program administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and part of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP).
WWC provides breast and cervical cancer screening (clinical breast exams, Pap tests and pelvic exams and mammograms) to eligible women at over 130 sites through cooperative efforts of multiple statewide providers. The providers of WWC operate under the HIPPA confidentially laws (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996).

The WWC program is charged with providing recruitment activities to increase and improve access to quality breast and cervical cancer screening services among eligible women. Recruitment is the act of seeking out potentially eligible women for enrollment into a program. The WWC program utilizes evidence-based practices and population-based interventions to conduct its recruitment activities.
1. Education WWC education and promotion involves the design and delivery of clear and consistent messaging that promotes the importance of breast and cervical screenings to large and small audiences. Educating communities on WWC and promoting breast and cervical cancer screenings can be done in numerous ways, including large or small group presentations, public awareness campaigns, social media marketing and public service announcements (PSAs).
2. Outreach WWC outreach is an active process that involves reaching out to women in the community and bringing them into an agency providing WWC services. Outreach can be done in large or small groups, and involves providing information on the availability of breast and cervical cancer screening services as well as the importance of these services in relation to health. It relies on population-specific, evidence-based strategies designed to reach out and bring clients from the community into a WWC agency setting.
3. Inreach Inreach is an active process that involves reaching clients eligible for WWC services who are already utilizing other health services within an agency. This type of recruitment may also include identifying, and reaching out to, clients who were screened by the program in the past but have not been an active enrollee in recent years. |

The Women’s Wellness Connection (WWC) program has established a statewide community coordination model of professional education and partnership. The WWC program contracts with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to staff regional WWC Community Coordinators throughout the state. The ACS WWC Community Coordinators provide several benefits to the WWC program. First, they reside in the regions that they work in and are connected and knowledgeable about their communities. Additionally, as ACS staff members, the WWC Community Coordinators have access to a large amount of cancer resources. Furthermore, the ACS WWC Community Coordinators are more likely to be connected to community partnership activities, including coalitions, task forces and relevant committees. Find out who the Community Coordinator is in your region and how they spread the word about WWC and the importance of breast and service cancer screenings.

The Women’s Wellness Connection (WWC) program partners with the American Cancer Society (ACS) for a toll-free, multilingual referral line to connect clients to over 130 screening providers across the state. When individuals call either the statewide or local numbers, they speak directly with a trained call-center staff that screen them for eligibility, locate the appropriate WWC location and directly connect the clients with the clinic so appointments can be set up right away (what is otherwise called a “warm transfer”). The referral line also provides information on other screening programs to callers who are ineligible for WWC screening services. |
