24-Karat Gold Winners

2012 Winner –Todd Richmond, Matt Jones, Dave Bellack and Auden Schendler (The Aspen Skiing Company)

The “24-Karat Gold Challenge Award” will be handled in the following way:

  • At this year’s fall award ceremony, the Gold Leader Champion will be honored with the “24-Karat Gold Challenge Award” to be displayed at their facility for a one-year term.
  • At the next annual award’s ceremony, the Gold Champion will return the award in good order, so that it may be handed over to the next facility who may win (unless the past year’s champion “wins” it again).
  • The award is to remain a challenge competition and will not become the property of any one facility, even if won more than once.

The Aspen Skiing Company Team Submittal - Todd Richmond, Matt Jones, Dave Bellack and Auden Schendler

The Aspen Skiing Company completed a coal mine methane capture project. This project responsibly and efficiently captures waste methane from the Elk creek mine in Somerset, Colorado to generate three megawatts of power using piston engines. It will generate close to 30,000 MWh of electricity, roughly equivalent to the annual energy consumption of Aspen Skiing Company.  Captured methane will be combusted rather than released reducing emissions of a highly potent greenhouse gas. Through this project 96,465 tons of CO2 equivalent would be eliminated every year, equivalent to removing 13,151 cars from the road.
