Paper Reduction

The department has taken the following measures to decrease it’s paper use by 20% since 2004:
- Set all copier default settings to print double-sided copies;
- Increased the number of printers with duplex printing capabilities; and
- Posted information on-line instead of sending out printed documents;

Waste Audit Results

The department has taken the following measures in order to increase the amount of materials diverted from the landfill:
- Placed single-stream recycling bins in all conference rooms, offices, cubicles and other work stations. The single-stream bins accept the following materials: mixed paper, plastics, aluminum, tin, paperboard, cardboard, and glass;
- Batteries and ink and toner cartridges are also collected for recycling;
- Sponsors an employee collection event annually for recycling electronic waste. In 2010, approximately 10,500 lbs of e-waste was recycled;

- Implemented a composting pilot project for the collection of organic material. For more information, read the Department’s Final Compost Pilot Project Report The pilot was expanded in 2010 become a permanent program. Compost bins are now available in the cafeteria, core areas and kitchenettes, as well as in restrooms (to collect paper towel waste); and
- Conduct an annual waste audit to evaluate compliance with the composting and recycling programs.

- Print on both sides of the page;
- Request electronic bills and statements and pay bills on-line (save a stamp as well!); and
- Reduce your junk mail

- Use reusable bags when you shop;
- Avoid purchasing items with excessive packaging;
- Participate in your local recycling program. To find a recycling center near you, see the department’s Recycle 4 Colorado website
- Participate in your local compost program. If none is available in your area, start a compost pile in your back yard. For information on how to get started composting at home visit the Denver Recycles website
- Give up disposable plastic water bottles.
