The Division of Environmental Health and Sustainabilty contains a number of programs whose primary focus is ensuring the health of our environment.

| The CAFO program addresses the handling of animal manure and nutrients, as well as odor issues at housed commercial swine feeding operations. The program also works on cross media initiatives and looks for opportunities to incorporate pollution prevention to achieve improved environmental outcomes. |

| Greening Government contains directives and a Climate Action Plan, which calls for specific reductions in energy, petroleum, water and trash and to increase the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures. |
| The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has launched a mercury prevention and reduction campaign to inform citizens, businesses and the medical industry about the serious health threat associated with exposures to mercury and to develop strategies to keep mercury out of our environment. |
| The Pollution Prevention Advisory Board was created in 1992 to provide overall policy guidance, coordination, and advice to the Department and Division regarding pollution prevention activities. |
| The Pollution Prevention Program is dedicated to promoting and supporting long-term process improvements and best management practices that reduce or eliminate waste before it is generated in household, commercial and industrial scenarios. |
| Working through the Pollution Prevention Advisory Board and the Assistance Committee to the Board, the program promotes economic development through the productive management of materials that would otherwise be treated as discards. |
| EPCRA provides for the collection and access to information regarding the use, storage, production, and release of hazardous chemicals, thereby helping to inform emergency planners/responders and the public. |
| When a regulated entity is found to be in violation of environmental regulations, the environmental divisions within the Department of Public Health and Environment may assess a monetary penalty or fine. |
| Colorado Legislature enacted HB07-1341, which provides that the production of oil and gas in Colorado must occur in a manner "consistent with the protection of public health, safety, and welfare, including protection of the environment and wildlife resources". |
| This program is intended to encourage the disposal, recycling or reuse of illegally dumped tires as well as encourage the recycling or reuse of waste tires. |
