Birth Defects Monitoring and Prevention

crcsn LogoColorado Responds to Children with Special Needs (CRCSN) is a group of specialized public health reporting programs, surveillance data bases and early intervention. Each program characterizes disease prevalence, and provides epidemiological information for research and preventive intervention. Programs within the group include birth defects, autism, fetal alcohol syndrome, muscular dystrophy (provide links), and other specialized databases.

 

 Each program is connected to national organizations:

 

  • The Birth Defects Program is part of the National Birth Defects and Prevention Network, Inc.

  • The Autism Project is part of the national group CADDRE, the Centers for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research and Epidemiology.

  • The Muscular Dystrophy Project is part of the national group MD STARNet, Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance Tracking and Research Network.

Birth Defects Registry Resources

The National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) is a group of birth defects programs and individuals working at the local, state, and national level in birth defects monitoring, research, and prevention. The Network assesses the impact of birth defects upon children, families, and health care; identifies factors that can be used to develop primary prevention strategies; and assists families and their providers in secondary disabilities prevention.

 

  1. To fulfill its mission, NBDPN pursues the following goals:
    Improve access and application of information about the prevalence and trends of birth defects

  2. Increase collaboration between members within the birth defects community

  3. Advance science through birth defects monitoring and its application to public health efforts and resource allocation

Neural Tube Defects Project

CRCSN performs public health intervention and prevention through the Neural Tube Defects (NTD) Recurrence Prevention project. CRCSN staff conducted interviews with mothers who had an affected neural tube defect pregnancy. Information is provided on the preventive benefits of folic acid in reducing risk for a recurrent neural tube defects pregnancy. Currently, CRCSN is notifying mothers of the preventive benefits of folic acid through a letter. Interviews will begin again in Fiscal Year 2009.
