Colorado Immunization Information System

CIIS Logo

Keeping track of shot records has never been easier! By participating in the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS), healthcare professionals, parents and individuals can rest assured that their immunization records are safe and complete.

CIIS is a confidential, population-based, computerized system that collects and disseminates consolidated immunization information for Coloradans of all ages.

Operated by the Colorado Immunization Section at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, CIIS enables any immunization provider in Colorado to electronically track immunizations a person has received, thereby maintaining an ongoing and complete record to ensure that the person receives all recommended shots in a timely manner.

An immunization information system is an important tool to increase and sustain high immunization coverage rates by consolidating immunization records from multiple providers, allowing providers to generate recall notices for individuals who are not up-to-date, minimizing over-immunization, and identifying missed opportunities for immunization. CIIS meets the guidelines for immunization information system functionality developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although CIIS is exempt under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as a public health authority, we strive to maintain the highest level of compliance with HIPAA regulations. Please visit our Confidentiality webpage for more information on CIIS and HIPAA.

CIIS is endorsed by the Colorado Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians, the Colorado Children's Immunization Coalition, and the Colorado Adult Immunization Coalition as the statewide immunization registry in Colorado.

CIIS Tip of the Month - Recording Vaccine Exemptions in CIIS

If a patient, parent, or legal guardian refuses vaccination in your clinic, you can record this information in CIIS from the drop-down menu which appears on the Add Immunizations screen. There are four types of vaccine refusals (exemptions) available in CIIS:

  • Religious
  • Personal (Philosophical or personal belief objections)
  • Deferred (Temporarily delayed)
  • Medical (Previous adverse event, allergic reaction, compromised medical condition)

Here are some important features in CIIS that you will want to be aware of when recording vaccine exemptions:

  • If the vaccine refusal is due to a Medical Exemption, the system will prompt you to select from a list of precautions/contraindications that are associated with that particular vaccine. Depending on the patient's medical condition, the Recommender may be affected (e.g., that particular vaccine may no longer be recommended for that patient). All other exemptions (Religious, Personal, Deferred) will not affect the Recommender.
  • Regardless of the exemption taken by the patient, the system will create a note within the Notes sub-module capturing the date, time, and reason the vaccine was refused. In addition, if a Medical Exemption is taken, a precaution/contraindication will also be generated for the patient within the Precautions/Contraindications sub module. The date, time, and reason will be auto-populated; however, if an "Effective Date" and "Expiration Date" are associated with the precaution/contraindication selected, then the user will need to designate this information within the Precautions/Contraindications sub-module.
  • Once a patient refuses one or more vaccines, text stating that the "Patient has previously refused one or more vaccines" will be displayed on the patient's Immunization Home screen. By clicking on this statement link, the user will be taken directly to the Notes sub-module where more details about the refused vaccine(s) will be available. Here the user can also add further comments to the Notes field.
