Vocational Rehabilitation is very important in aiding the mentally ill in resuming their independence and self worth. It can have a positive effect on their psychiatric symptoms. As one patient recently said, “Since working with staff at CMHIP, I feel like a worthy human again.”
The Vocational Rehabilitation Department provides the following services at CMHIP: vocational testing and assessment; vocational counseling, both individual and group; job skills training on campus, both individual and group; and job skills training in the community, both individual and group. As patients’ come closer to discharge they are given the opportunity to take part in a job club, a group that teaches the basics of resume writing, job application process, and interviewing skills. CMHIP also works with a variety of outside agencies to provide job placement. Employment can be a very effective treatment in many patients’ lives. It is definitely a positive step in developing the skills necessary for a successful discharge.
Job training opportunities at CMHIP include work at the following sites:
Canteen, Print Shop, Upholstery Shop, Warehouse, Grounds Crew, Paint Crew, Physical Therapy, Admissions, Recreation Center, Small Business Skills Training Shop, Housekeeping, Patient Library, Building Trades, Education Department, On –unit job assignments.
Community jobs are available with staff supervision at Pueblo Diversified Industries and include cartridge recycling, janitorial, assembly/production and vending machine operations.
