Domestic Violence Information

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive control perpetrated by one person against another in an intimate relationship.  This includes:

  • Abuse that occurs after a relationship has ended
  • Current and former partners who are not/were not co-habitating
  • Is gender and sexual orientation neutral

Domestic violence can happen to anyone: it is prevalent across all races, ethnicities, age groups, sexual orientations, gender identities, religions, socio-economic statuses, family backgrounds, country of origin, and education levels.

Domestic violence can be characterized by physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, or economic abuse or any isolating and controlling behaviors on the part of the perpetrator.  This includes any behaviors that that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone.
