The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) is dedicated to protecting and strengthening this state's agriculture industry, and livestock producers play a vital role in that effort.
The Colorado Livestock Security System (CLSS) is designed to help protect livestock in the event of an emergency. That means whether there's a blizzard, flood, disease, or fire, the Department can be prepared to assist in protecting your livestock and investment.
I encourage livestock owners to support CLSS because in the face of a global market, livestock producers must be vigilant in protecting their livestock.

CLSS is a Key to Protecting, Maintaining and Securing Colorado's Livestock Industry
Personal information and other specific details of livestock operations gathered for the CLSS are protected under Colorado law (35.57.9 C.R.S.) the Livestock Information Security Act. The collected data is part of the CDA all-hazards security system.
CLSS combines established livestock security measures with modern technology to provide a comprehensive emergency response:

CDA's Animal Division is responsible for animal health and disease control activities in Colorado.

CDA's Brands Division protects the livestock industry from loss by theft, illegal butchering or straying of livestock through mandatory inspection in Colorado.

Homeland Security establishes a comprehensive all-hazards approach to enhance the ability of the United States to manage domestic incidents that may impact food and agricultural systems.

National Animal Identification System (NAIS) limits the scope of any foreign or domestic animal disease concern and ensures it is contained and eradicated as quickly as possible. The CLSS is not a program within NAIS and information received for CLSS will not be shared with the national program.

Laboratory Testing, including CDA's Rocky Mountain Regional Animal Health Laboratory, provides timely, accurate and pertinent testing services and educational outreach to the agricultural industry.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) utilizes a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data that can capture, manage, analyze, and display geographic locations to aid in emergency response.

Mobile Computing Technologies allows data capture and sharing from the field, giving first responders the ability to communicate electronically with animal health officials.
