The Town of Cokedale is a quaint former mining camp nestled in the foothills of the Sangre DeCristo Mountains eight miles west of Trinidad on scenic Highway 12.  Cokedale was built and billed as a model mining camp to include everything a miner and his family might need . As an added bonus, all housing was equipped with the modern convienience of electrcity and indoor running water.  The mine ceased operation in 1947 and the houses and structures, which normally would have been slated for demolition were sold to the miners instead. Cokedale became an incorporated in Township in 1948. As most of the original structures are still standing, The Town was granted National Historic District Status in 1985.  The picturesque Town is one square mile and is currently home to approximately 150 residents, a Mining Museum, volunteer fire department and beautifully maintained park in the center of Town.
