BEST PRACTICES: FIREARM
SAFETY FOR
CHILDREN AND YOUTH
Topic Overview
More than 20,000 people under age 20 are killed or
injured by firearms in the United States each year. Gun violence is the
second leading cause of death to young people ages 10 to 19 in the
United States, and it imposes significant economic and psychological
costs upon society.
Therefore, keeping children and youth safe from gun
violence and restricting young people's unsupervised access to guns
should be key priorities for legislators, law enforcement, public health
practitioners, educators, and parents alike.
