BEST PRACTICES: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Topic Overview

According to the World Health Organization’s Health for All and the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and to improve their health. To plan effective strategies, each community must go through its own process of assessing needs, setting priorities, formulating solutions, and owning programs.

There are a variety of models that help communities increase their capacity to plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive, community-based health promotion programs. Each approach includes:

  • Mobilizing the community

  • Collecting and organizing data

  • Choosing health priorities

  • Developing comprehensive intervention plans

  • Evaluating program progress
